JS body recommends appointment of more judges

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry on Tuesday recommended appointing an adequate number of judges to reduce the backlog of cases. The committee made the recommendations at its second meeting held at the Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Suranjit Sengupta in the chair. The other recommendations are strengthening the monitoring of works of the judges, enhancing logistic support, developing infrastructure of the courts and curbing district judges’ tendency to leave stations. Besides, the feasibility of introduction of night shift court was thoroughly discussed at the meeting. The meeting also focused on digitalisation of the overall functions of the country’s judiciary to cut down the backlog of the cases. It also discussed the progress of digitalisation of land registration activities and asked the ministry to present a complete proposal at the committee’s next meeting to curb bribery in land sub-registrar offices. Committee members Law Minister Anisul Huq, Abdul Matin Khasru, Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Shamsul Haque Tuku, Abdul Mazid Khan, Talukder Md Yunus and Ziaul Haque Mridha and chairman of the Law Commission and former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque were, among others, present at meeting, said a press release. On Sunday, Law Minister Anisul Huq said there are currently 24 lakh cases pending with magistrate and district courts across the country. – UNB
