Around three hundreds students of Journalism and Media studies (JMS) department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) damaged buses and blockaded the Dhaka-Aricha highway torching tyers on Sunday protesting the physical assaults of one of their teachers and demanding the expulsion of a police sergeant.
The students took to the street around 12:40 pm. The blockade caused several kilometers-long of tailback on both sides of the highway. The agitating students vandalised at least four buses and beat up a police member near the main entrance of the university.Source said, the angry students took the street as one of their teachers an assistant professor – Rakib Ahmed – was assaulted by Imran, a Police sergeant, on Saturday night at the House Building area in Uttara as he was driving his car on the wrong lane. The sergeant allegedly wanted to seize the car and attacked the teacher physically took him (Rakib) near the police box.
Proctor of the university, professor Tapan Kumar Shaha urged the students to withdraw their road blockade programme as the police sergeant had already been suspended.
The protestors chanted slogans against the sergeant and demanded life time expulsion of the sergeant while they also urged the JU authority to take action over the matter.
Moudud Ahmed, a final year student of JMS dept. said that they will go back to their halls if the authorities dismiss that sergeant from job.
The highway remained blocked till the filing of this report at 3-30pm.
