JU suspends five BCL men for beating up journos


Dhaka – The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authority on Friday night suspended five men of BCL JU unit over beating up two journalists in two separate incidents.The decision was made at an emergency syndicate meeting headed by VC Professor Farzana Islam receiving two reports from the duos committee. The punishment will enforced by June 26, 2016; JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique confirmed.
The suspended BCL men were Mohitosh Roy Titu of History and Sharif Hossain Laskar of Anthropology dept for two years, Ikram Uddin Omi of Marketing department and Iqram Nahid of Statistics department for six months and Riyajul Islam of Bangla department for four months. The BCL men were also declared ‘undesirable’ on the university campus during the punishment period.
Among them, Tito is the religious affairs secretary and Omi is an Assistant Secretary of JU BCL unit while Iqram, Laskar and Riyajul are BCL activists. Baizid Islam, a final year student of Botany department was warned in writing.
On June 4, some BCL activists led by Laskar beat up Abu Raihan, a JU correspondent of an online news portal over a previous enmity, while Raihan was going to his relative’s house near University Bismail area, said campus sources. On June 8, some 10-12 BCL leaders and activists beat up Shafiqul Islam, a JU correspondent of bdnews24.com, when he tried to rescue a young woman from an alleged abductor, according to witnesses.
JU Journalists declared two-day blockade of the registrar building to press their demands. A number of journalists handed over a memorandum to the vice-chancellor on October 9. – JU Correspondent
