Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Professor Anwar Hossain has staged a counter sit-in in front of his residence, some 10 yards from the demonstrating teachers who have been demanding his resignation.
On returning to the campus from Dhaka around 10.15pm on Tuesday, the VC after seeing scores of teachers under the banner “Sadharan Shikkhok Forum’ observing a sit-in demonstration in front of his residence, spread a bed sheet there and sat on it along with his wife.
The teachers have been demonstrating since Tuesday afternoon as the VC did not resign even after the expiry of the deadline they had set for his resignation.
Anwar Hossain said sit-in demonstration in front of someone’s residence was against a citizen’s right and a breach of law.
He said this kind of irrational and inhuman behaviour of the teachers would deepen the crisis in the university.
The VC said he would not enter his residence even if there is a single agitating teacher there.
The forum’s member secretary Quamrul Ahsan said they would not change their programme. The VC was trying to confuse all, he said.
Dhaka University Professor Anwar Hossain was made VC on May 17 last year after Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir resigned following demonstrations by students and teachers. Later he was made a permanent VC through an election.
Some teachers, including those close to the previous VC and known to be pro-BNP, started demanding his resignation a few months after Prof Anwar Hossain took charge.
They are active in the present agitation.
Meanwhile, two other groups of university teachers have differed with those leading the agitation.
Several months ago, university’s teachers association started a movement against the VC which disrupted academic activities in the JU campus.
They backed off after the High Court ordered not to hamper the university’s daily activities.
But the movement resumed recently under the new banner of General Teachers Forum.
The teachers demonstrating under the banner of the ‘Sadharon Shikkhok Forum’ or General Teachers Forum had confined the VC to his office for four days from August 21-August 24, leading to complete disruption at the university.
Later, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid negotiated with the agitating teachers to end the impasse.
He assured to form a committee with University Grants Commission member Mohibur Rahman at the head to probe the teachers’ allegations.
After that the teachers stalled their programme for 15 working days.
They resumed the stir after the deadline expired.
VC Anwar Hossain said President Abdul Hamid and the university’s chancellor formed a probe commission to restore congenial atmosphere on the campus. The commission has finished its job, he said.
“We are waiting for the commission’s report. We will accept whatever the Chancellor recommends in his report,” he said.
The agitating teachers have been confining the university registrar Abu Bakar Siddique and deputy registrar Abu Hassan to the Registrar Office for the last three days. The university’s officers’ association protested against that.
Prof Anwar Hossain has asked the teachers to set free the registrar and deputy registrar.-bdnews24.com
