Two groups of Awami Juba League and Bangladesh Chhatra League have clashed again at the Central Railway Building (CRB) area in Chittagong City.Police said they opened fire on Monday to disperse the warring supporters of Juba League central committee’s Deputy Finance Secretary Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar and expelled Chhatra League central committee assistant secretary Saiful Alam Limon.A clash and subsequent gunbattle between these two groups at the same place two years ago had left two including a child dead. Both organisations are affiliated with the ruling Awami League.Kotwali Police Station OC Md Jasim Uddin said Babar’s followers gathered at Satrasta intersection near CRB at Monday noon while Limon’s supporters started coming to the same spot parading the Atmasing street.
“Both groups were wielding wooden sticks and home-made weapons. As they started a running battle, police took position in the middle and tried to disperse them,” he told greenwatchbd.com.Asked whether any groups had opened fire, he said, “I think someone from one of the groups shot one round. We are not sure yet. But we shot four rounds to separate them.”The clash might have taken place to establish dominance for extortion in the locality, the OC added.A Juba League activist and an 8-year-old boy were killed during the clash on June 24, 2013 over Tk 4.8 million tender submission at the CRB.A case was also filed over that incident accusing 87 people including Babar and Limon.Police had arrested 57 including those two during raids in the port city and Dhaka since that clash, but most of them were released after they secured bails within months.
