Former Awami League MP Sarah Begum Kabari has quit the race for Dhaka North City Corporation mayor.
BNP leader Abdus Salam, mayor candidate for Dhaka South, also pulled out on Thursday, the last day for withdrawing nomination. The elections to two Dhaka and Chittagong City corporations are scheduled on Apr 28.
Kabari, a celebrated actress of yesteryears, submitted a request to withdraw her nomination to the returning officer at Agargaon.
“I’m surrendering because I love the prime minister, otherwise I could have been a rebel,” Kabari was quoted as saying
Kabari, however, said the decision to quit was ‘painful’, while deeming herself a ‘proper candidate’.
“I was a good candidate. I wanted to compete. So I’m feeling hurt. The prime minister did not give a direct order, she said, but dropped a hint on the matter.
Kabari’s withdrawal means none except businessman Annisul Huq will run for mayor at Dhaka north with backing from ruling Awami League.
Likewise, Salam’s decision to pull out leaves Mirza Abbas as the BNP’s only favoured candidate for Dhaka South.
