Khaleda calls Hasina ‘PM in name only’

Dhaka-BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday described Sheikh Hasina as a ‘name-only’ Prime Minister, saying she works at the ‘dictate’ of others.Speaking at an iftar party, the BNP chief also alleged that the government is killing the perpetrators of the secret killings in crossfire to hush up its involvement in those incidents.
“It’s difficult to say whether she (Hasina) is Bangladesh Prime Minister or working as any other minister. Country’s people now think she is not the Prime Minister. She’s a name-only Prime Minister as she acts at the dictate of others,” Khaleda said.
Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (Jagpa), one of the components of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, arranged the programme at a city hotel.
Khaleda alleged that though killing incidents are happening one after another following the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi, the government is not arresting the perpetrators.
“Though they’d arrested one or two criminals, we’re not sure whether they are real killers or not, they were taken in remand from jail. But, from the remand, they didn’t return to jail or their parents as they have straight been killed in crossfire. The only reason behind it is that the arrested people gave such information which proves government’s link to the incidents,” she observed.
The BNP chief said the government is killing people in crossfire even in this fasting month of Ramadan.
Khaleda claimed that the basic values of the Liberation War, democracy, justice, equal rights and security of all are absent in the country.
She said those who are ruling the country are not people’s representatives. “They have no people’s mandate.”
Taking a swipe at the government for the arrests in the recent weeklong crackdown, Khaleda said although there is a court order banning arrest without any warrant and in plainclothes at night, it does not pay any heed to this. “They’re not complying with the court order. Instead, they’re dictating to the court as to what to do and what not to do,” Khaleda said.
She urged all to get united to overcome the country’s current situation and restore democracy here.
