Khaleda files petition for bail in Comilla arson attack cases

Dhaka, Oct 02 – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia Tuesday filed a petition with the High Court seeking bail in a case filed under the Special Powers Act in connection with an arson attack in Cumilla’s Chauddagram Upazila in 2015.In the petition, Khaleda challenged a Cumilla court order that on September 13 rejected her bail petition in connection with the same case.
“We will move before a High Court within a day or two for hearing on the bail petition,” Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman, one of the counsels for BNP chief, told The Independent.
The case was filed under the Special Powers Act, 1974 for vandalizing a covered van in Chauddagram area in Cumilla on January 25, in 2015.
Police submitted charge sheet to the court concerned against Khaleda Zia and 32 others.
On August 13 this year, the HC cancelled its earlier order that had granted six-month bail to Khaleda in the case.
The HC, however, directed the trial court concerned in Cumilla to dispose of her bail petition in this case within seven days after receiving the order.
Meanwhile, another High Court bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim started the hearing on the appeal filed by BNP chief challenging the lower court verdict convicting her five-year jail in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
