Khaleda says not quilty in graft case, charges in 10 sabotage cases Jan 9

Dhaka – BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia on Thursday pleaded herself not guilty in the Zia Charitable Trust Graft case. She disclosed the claim while giving her statement in self-defence in the case.
Meanwhile, Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of the Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka, who was presiding over the court on Thursday read out the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses and wanted her comments on the statements. Thirty-two such witnesses testified to the court in the case.
Kkaleda Zia went to the special court at about 12.30 pm to attend the proceeding of the court. However, she read out her statement in self-defence partially in the court. Later, the judge of the special court fixed December 8, for hearing the remaining part of the BNP leader’s statement.The Zia Charitable Trust case, filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on 3 July 2008 with the Ramna police station. As per the charge sheet, Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman and four others embezzled Tk 2.1 crore of the Trust.
On August 8, 2011, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Model Police Station accusing four persons, including Khaleda Zia of raising funds for the trust from unknown sources abusing her official position.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka on Thursday fixed January 9, 2017 to frame charges in 10 cases filed against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others for sabotage and seditious activities.
Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the court passed the order fixing the new date. The court heard on 10 separate time petitions, submitted by Khaleda Zia’s counsel Sanaullah Miah. The court also said, Khaleda Zia will be indicted in absentia in the cases, if she fails to appear to the court on the next date.
The BNP Chief’s counsel on behalf of his client sought adjournment of the hearing saying that his client could not come to this court as she appeared in another court on Thursday in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case to place her statement in self-defence.
The court said she would be indicted in absentia in 10 cases against her if she fails to appear before the court on 9 January next.
Her lawyer sought adjournment of the hearing saying that his client Khaleda Zia could not appear before the court as she has to appear before another court in connection with Zia Charitable Trust case to place her self-defence statements.
The cases are eight sabotage cases at Darussalam, Mirpur, one sedition case and the other is the explosive substances. – Special Correspondent
