BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address a May Day rally of workers at Suhrawardy Udyan. Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, a front organisaiton of BNP, will organise the rally to mark the historic May Day.Party senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed disclosed this at a press conference at party’s central office at Naya Paltan in the city yesterday.
He said they have already got permission from Public Works Department to use the Suhrawardy Udyan premises but yet to get consent from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Replying to a question, the BNP leader criticized the Chief Election Commissioner for his comments that the third phase of Union Parishad polls was fairer than the previous ones.
He accused the Election Commission of making mockery with the nation by making such comments.
Rizvi said the people have seen the real scenario of the polls by their own and through electronic and print media. We have also received huge allegations about irregularities from fields.
He questioned as to how the CEC could claim that the election poll was fairer and peaceful despite knowing the real scenario.
“In fact, the Election Commission is making mockery with people in the name of voting. The CEC is doing only what he feels necessary to protect his job,” he said.
He described the CEC and his deputies as “shameless” and said they are not quitting from their posts shouldering their failure to hold fair polls as they have no sense of shame.
The BNP leader further said the EC is assisting the government in destroying and stampeding voting and election systems.
Earlier on Saturday, the CEC at a post-election briefing claimed that the third phase of UP polls was held amid peaceful environment and enthusiasm among the voters. He further said the number of incidents was fewer than that of the previous phases.
Meanwhile, speaking at a discussion meeting in the city, BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman alleged that the government is showing people a bioscope of mockery in the name of election.
“The Election Commission did not take any strong stance to make the third phase of Union Parishad (UP) polls free and fair,” he said, adding that the EC even didn’t cancel elections at the centres where votes were rigged massively.
