Dhaka-The Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka asked the BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to appear in his court on December 1 in a sedition case. Besides, Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla of the court on Tuesday passed orders directing Khaleda Zia to appear in the court in five sabotage cases filed with the Darus Salam Police Station on the same date after hearing on her concerned time petitions.
A former secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and also a working committee member of the ruling party, Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi filed the case on January 25, after she allegedly expressed some doubts on the number of martyrs. The government claims three million people were martyred during the Liberation War of 1971. Earlier, advocate Mehedi received a green signal from the Ministry of Home Affairs to lodge the case.
Earlier on December 21, last year, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a rally of freedom fighters, commented that there is a controversy about the number of martyrs of country’s war of independence. Later, on December 23, Momtaj Uddin Ahmed sent a legal notice to the BNP Chief to withdraw her comment.
Khaleda’s lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain said that there is nothing of sedition in BNP chief’s speech about the accurate number of martyrs.-Special Correspondent
