Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia would be freed through a mass-upsurge.
“A conspiracy is underway so that Khaleda Zia cannot join the next polls,” Mirza Fakhrul told a human chain programme in the capital.
Pro-BNP Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad organised the programme demanding immediate release of Khaleda Zia who landed in jail on 8 February after a makeshift court sentenced her to five years in jail.
Calling Khaleda the symbol of country’s sovereignty, the BNP secretary general said she should be freed through a national unity of all irrespective of partisan affiliation.
“The illegitimate and immoral government of Awami League is going ahead to implement its blueprint as part of its long-term plan of keeping Khaleda Zia away from politics,” alleged Fakhrul.
He called on all from all walks of life to join the movement for establishing restoring the people’s basic rights including their franchise.
