The leader of the opposition Begum Khaleda Zia on Thursday responded to the call of the businesses to shun shutdowns by asking them to join the anti-government movement instead.
The BNP Chairperson said this at the closing ceremony of the 23rd Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition, Batexpo-2012, where she explained the logic of the opposition movement.
The government is trying to erase democracy, thwart the divergent opinions and the opposition with a one-party rule, she alleged. The ruling party’s armed criminals have been given the go-ahead to carry out murders, assaults and ransacking.
She pleaded that businessmen and industrialists cannot remain silent at such time and warned that industries, business and economy will be destroyed if the situation does not change.
“The businessmen must contribute from their own position and be vocal to bring an end to the present chaotic situation, protect democracy, establish rule of law and protect the people’s right to vote,” the former Prime Minister added.
The leader of the opposition was the chief guest at the closing ceremony of Batexpo-2012, the biggest-ever apparel show organised by Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
She attended the function after the close of the BNP-led opposition 18-Party Alliance-sponsored half-day countrywide shutdown.
