BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack for fourth consecutive day at Banglamotor by pro-Awami League activists leaving at least two persons including her adviser MA Quayum injured. The other was a staff member of her security force.
Witnesses said a group of Chhata League activists reportedly led by central leader Rahman Rubel and Mamunur Rashid sunndely swooped on the motorcade when it stuck at traffic signal at Baglamotor crossing at 5:15pm yesterday.
The incident took place 25 minutes after she left her Gulshan residence at 4:50pm.
The unruly elements attacked the motorcade with brickbats, sticks and sharp weapons and fully smashed down the back windshield of Khaleda’s car.
Khaleda was sitting in the middle of the car when the attack was excecuted but she escaped unhurt, said a member of her media wing.
The miscreants indiscriminately smashed the windowpanes of vehicles carrying her security guards and damaged number of those.
Two of the attackers said to be Chhatra League activists were hurt being knocked down by a fast moving Khaleda’s car trying to escape the scene.
Lt (Retd) Samiul, a member of Khaleda’s security staff, came under attack by Chhatra Leagues activists and he was beaten by them indiscriminately. He was badly injured as attackers hit his head with hokey-sticks.
Police helped Shamiul come out of the attackers and took him to Dhaka Medical Hospital first then he was shifted to United Hospital.
Later, the motorcade scheduled for electioneering at Jatrabari areas went to party central office at Naya Paltan.
The former premier was accompanied, among others, by BNP vice chairman Selima Rahman, special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Noor-e-Ara Safa,, Shirin Sultana and Sultana Ahmed.
On Tuesday, Khaleda’s motorcade came under attack at Fakirerpool when Khaleda was going to Naya Paltan after her mass contact programme in favour of mayoral aspirant Mirza Abbas for Dhaka South City Corporation. Chhatra Dal activists however chased the attackers.
Earlier on Monday Khaleda’s motorcade and party supporters came under attack, Bnp leaders complained, by ruling party activists at Kawanbazar injuring a number of people including at least one member of her security guards and damaged five cars.
On Sunday, the BNP chairperson was first obstructed by ruling party men in Uttara while she took part in electioneering in favour of mayoral aspirant Tabith Awal for Dhaka North City Corporation. – Staff Reporter
