Khaleda’s protest rally against abduction, killing now in Demra May 17

BNP will hold a public meeting at Demra industrial zone in Dhaka on May 17 protesting killing, enforced disappearance and abduction. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address the meeting as the chief guest.
The decision has been taken at a meeting of BNP standing committee at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office last night with Khaleda Zia in the chair.
Meeting sources said the decision to hold the public meeting came in the walks of government’s denial of venue to hold a rally in Narayangabj on Wednesday.The former premier however will go to Narayanganj on Wednesday to express her sympathies for the family members of seven victims.
However, another sources said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called the family members of the seven murder victims. In that case she might reschedule her programme to visit the troubled district.
The standing committee, the highest policy making body of the BNP, the main political rival of the ruling Awami League, also decided to stage demonstrations at upazila (sub-district), district and city levels on May 18-20 protesting the continuous killing, forced disappearance and abduction.
The meeting began at 9:00pm and continued for two hours entrusted the responsibility to party senior leaders to interact with leaders of different political parties, professional bodies and civil society groups to build greater unity against killing, forced disappearance and abduction.
Some memers of the opinion to call hartal programme protesting the forced disappreance and abduction but Khaleda opposed the proposal saying that this type of programme would increase government repression.
The meeting also decided to higher court challenging the government decision to hold trials of Khaleda Zia in two cases at Alia Madrasha ground.
Dr RA Ghani, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, MK Anwar, Lt Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Dr Abdul Moin Khan and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, among oters attended the meeting.
Meanwhile , the authorities did not give permission to local BNP to holf its rally in Narayanganj city on Wednesday.
A senior BNP leader said however said though the administration did not get permission to hold a rally in Narayanganj, the former premier would visit the district on Wednesday to express her sympathy for the family members of seven victims.
Though the local BNP have not got permission to hold the planned rally but the schedule for Khaleda Zia’s programme will remain unchanged. She is expected to visit the residences of Nazrul Islam and Chandan Sarkar, he added.
“Police has not given us permission to hold rally in Narayanganj to mark the visit of party chairerpson Khaleda Zia,” said district BNP president Advocate Toimur Alam Khandaker.
He said there would be no meeting rally on the day. The chairperson will only visit the residences of Nazrul Islam and Chandan Sarkar on Wednesday and express her sympathy for the family members of the seven people who had been abducted and killed recently.
Toimur said they had sought permission to hold a meeting on Bangabandhu Lane in Narayanganj on Wednesday which was denied by city corporation authorities. Later, he said the party had sought permission from the deputy commissioner to hold the rally at Alauddin Stadium, but that too was refused.
Narayanganj City panel mayor Nazrul Islam, senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and five others were abducted from the city’s Link Road on April 27 and were found dead on April 30. – Staff Reporter
