There will be no election without a non-party, poll-time government to oversee it, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has said.

The leader of the opposition said in an apparent dismissal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s breakthrough proposal to hold the coming national election under an all-party interim government.

“BNP will only go to election under a non-party and neutral government,” she said in her speech at the BNP-affiliated ‘Sammilito Peshajibi Parsishad’ convention on Sunday.

On Saturday, Dhaka police banned all meetings, rallies, processions and human chains in the capital amid rising tension over both BNP and Awami League planning to hold rallies on Oct 25.

Earlier, on Sunday morning, DMP’s Tejgoan Zone’s Deputy Commissioner Biplob Kumer Sarker informed journalists that the Parishad’s annual convention scheduled for the day had been cancelled.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia was expected to attend the program as its chief guest. The program was scheduled to begin at 2pm.

Additional police have been posted around the venue since morning. A water canon and a prison van were seen parked on the road leading to the venue.

Around noon, the organisers claimed they had not received any notice or letter cancelling the program..

An hour later, Biplob said authorities had permitted the Parishad to hold its convention on conditions.

The entrances to the center were opened immediately after this announcement and Parishad leaders entered the venue..

Sher-e-Banglanagar police had arrested four local-level leaders of the Perhsjibi Parishad as they brought out a procession near the venue of the convention in the morning.
BNP sources said Begum Khaleda Zia expressed her determination to be present at the venue of the convention and asked the leaders of the Pehasjibi Parishad to go ahead with their programme.
DMP sources however said that they allowed the meeting to be held at the instance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. – Staff Reporter
