Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon has formally inaugurated the first of 50 promised ‘hotspots’ – limited zones offering free WiFi internet paid for by the city corporation – in the areas covered by DSCC. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.
Barely a year into his stint as mayor, Khokon proved as good as his word Thursday, launching the first WiFi hotspot at Lalbagh Fort in Old Dhaka.
Addressing the inauguration program, the DSCC mayor said that besides the 50 announced spots, such free Wifi zones will gradually be installed in every important establishment in phases. “We hope to complete the installation bit in six months,” the DSCC Mayor added.
DSCC has been partnering the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) to provide the Wifi service. As long as an interested user is within range of the signal from the DSCC hotspot, they can avail the network through their device and use internet. There will be no password or network key required.
Important places under DSCC where free Wifi zone will be set up included Bangabandhu Museum, Bangabandhu Evenue, Rasel Square, Central Shaheed Minar, Oporajoy Bangla, Ahsan Manzil, Karjan Hall, Kamalapur railway station, Bahadur Shah Park, Osmani Uddyan, Ramna Park, Balda Garden, Central Shishu Park, Dhanmondi Lake, Mohanagar Naittya Manch, Science Enex Bhaban, Nagar Bhaban, DSCC Zone-2, Zone-3, and Zone-5, Sayedabad Bus terminal, Fulbaria bus terminal, Sadarghat Launch terminal, Dhaka Mohanagar Gereral hospital, Dhaka Mohanagar Shishu hospital, Nazira bazaar Matri Sadhan, New Market, Mayor Mohammad Hanif Community Centre, Segunbagicha community centre, Dhanmondi Bhuter Goli Community centre, Basabu Community Centre, Kazi Bashir auditorium, Paltan Community Centre, Hazi Gulam Morshed Communty centre, Hazi Khalil Sarder Community Centre, Azimpur Mini Community Centre, Hazi Zumman Community Centre, Fazlul Karim Community Centre, North Brook Hall Library, Bir Mukti joddha Sadek Hossain Khoka Community Centre, Majed Sarder Community Centre, Sutrapur Community Centre, Dhalpur Community Centre, Fakir Chand Com+ munity Centre, Sarafatgonj Commuinity Centre, Jatrabari Community Centre and Jahir Raihan Sangskritik Kendra.
Among others, Chief Executive officer of DSCC Khan Mohammad Belel, managing director of BTCL Fakhruddin Ahmed and local councillors were present at the program.
