Dhaka, May 14 – The BNP on Monday accused the government of hatching conspiracy to snatch victory in Khulna City Corporation election, which is being held Tuesday.“Khulna city has been turned into a city of panic and a tense situation is prevailing there. All residents in Khulna feared whether they would be able to go to the polling centre,” said BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
Speaking at a discussion meeting, he alleged that BNP polling agents in Khulna are being intimidated and presiding officers are also being threatened so that people cannot vote for the sheaf of paddy, the poll symbol of the BNP.
The government in assistance with administration, police and people involved in conducting the polls want to rig votes, he added.
Dr Mosharraf called upon the party leaders and activists to get ready for strong movement in Ramadan saying that the former premier Khaleda Zia would not be released without forcing the government through tougher movement.
Deshnetri Mukti Parishad organised the meeting demanding the release of Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Secchsebok Dal president Shafiul Bari.
Meanwhile, briefing reporters, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said an undeclared curfew for BNP leaders and activists has been enforced in Khulna .
The government has turned Khulna as a city of terror instead of creating a congenial atmosphere for holding the polls in a free and fair manner. – Staff Reporter
