Kushtia Islamic University closed as BCL factions clash

The fight erupted around 1pm on Saturday.
Warring students had hurled brickbats at each other, fought running battles and even opened fire several times, according to police and witnesses.
Police said they had to fire in the air to disperse the students, who were armed with sticks and other crude weapons.
The scuffle left several injured.
Additional police personnel have been deployed on the campus after the clash.Students vacated the university halls by 5pm following orders from the authorities.
The university will remain closed until Jan 5.
Vice-Chancellor Abdul Hakim Sarkar told reporters that IU has opted for an early winter vacation to “manage the tension” on the campus.
Quoting witnesses, IU Police Station OC Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury said the clash started after a BCL faction attacked the procession of a rival faction. The procession had been brought out demanding the VC’s removal on allegations of irregularities.
The police officer said the procession came under attack when it raised slogans against the IU BCL’s unit president Saiful Islam.
Kushtia’s Additional Superintendent of Police said four rounds of shots, two each from the battling BCL factions, were fired during the clash.
One of the groups is led by Saiful Islam and the other group owes allegiance to former IU BCL unit general secretary and Chhatra League leader ‘Halim’.
Each faction accuses the other of having triggered the clash. – Agencies
