Marine Safety Week, 2014 began on Saturday, aiming to raise people’s awareness about their security in water transports and on water routes.   The Week will be observed through various programmes across the country, including rallies and awareness activities on safe shipping.   The President and the Prime Minister issued separate messages wishing success of the Week this year.   In his message, President Abdul Hamid said the Marine Safety Week holds a lot of importance for the country because most of internal and international trades rely on river and sea routes.   He called upon all concerned to abide by the laws to ensure marine safety.   In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government has taken various measures to reduce accidents in water routes that include increasing the security of river ports, modernising the trainings of marine officers and navigators and building mass awareness about marine safety.   The Prime Minister hoped that all relevant institutions and agencies will be more active in ensuring environment-friendly and safe travel in river routes.   Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan in his message called upon all concerned to stop the unregistered and unfit vessels from plying the river routes.                          – UNB
