‘Mentally derailed’ woman arrested for Gulshan attack


Dhaka-Ruma Begum who was arrested from Polash in the district on Thursday night in connection with militant attack in Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery is known as said to be partially mentally derailed.Local residents said she lives in a state of mentally unbalanced almost half of the year.
Family sources said Ruma, daughter of freedom fighter Shahbuddin alias Bodu, lost her mental balance after divorce in her second marriage.
Despite remaining well for sometimes, she behaves abnormally again beating family members and tear her dresses and sometimes she set fire on her hair pouring kerosene on it, they alleged.
The family members do not believe about her involvement in militant connection but demanded her punishment if there was sufficient evidence against her.
“As a freedom fighter I want her appropriate punishment if my partially mentally deranged daughter is found guilty of militant connection,” said her father.
Sabina Begum, a sister of Ruma said that she was taking tea at footpath of Gulshan area during the militant attack Gulshan. She (Ruma) was standing there like other curious people, she added.
“We want legal action against hr if she really belongs to militants. Otherwise she should be freed,” she said.
Officer in charge of Shibpur Police Station Khandaker Imam Hossain said Ruma was whisked away to Dhaka after she was arrested by the detective police on Thursday night from Charkhupi village.-Narsingdi Correspondent
