Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Zabed Ali on Tuesday said the ministers and MPs will not able to enjoy government facilities other than security during their electioneering. “If the (Parliamentary) election is held in line with the current Constitution, the ministers and MPs can be candidates. So, we’ve amend the code of conduct with a view to ensuring a level-playing field (for all candidates),” he told reporters at his Election Commission Secretariat office. The commissioner said suggestions and cooperation from all quarters are needed in the amendment process of the election code of conduct for political parties and candidates. “We’re amending the code of conduct so that no one can enjoy the government facilities during their electioneering,” Zabed said. Replying to a query as to how the commission will enforce laws against the ministers and MPs in case of violation of the code, he said executive magistrates will take actions against candidates irrespective of their post and position. The EC is going to complete the draft of the code of conduct this week following the codes of India, the UK, Malaysia and Australia. The Commission will seek opinion on the draft code of conduct from registered political parties, civil society members and people at large. – UNB
