Dhaka – Hours after the Supreme Court upheld a High Court order granting a six-month bail to him, Awami League MP Abdur Rahman Bodi was released from jail on Sunday night in a case filed for concealing information about his wealth.He walked out of Kashimpur Central Jail part-2 around 8:45 pm, said jailer of the part Nasir Ahmed, UNB news agency reported.
Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of Supreme Court upheld the High Court order that granted bail to the Awami League MP in the case.
The SC bench of Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
On November 2, a court here sentenced Bodi, an MP from Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency, to three years imprisonment in the case.
The court also fined him Tk 10 lakh and he will have to suffer in jail for another six months in case of failure to pay the fine.
It also acquitted Bodi in the case filed for accumulating wealth beyond his known sources of income.
Soon after the verdict, Bodi was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on that day (Nov 2).
Meanwhile, the High Court on Wednesday granted him a six-month bail in the case following an appeal filed by him.
Later, the ACC filed the petition with the Chamber Judge of the Supreme Court against the HC order.
According to the case statement, Bodi concealed information about his wealth worth over Tk 108.6 million amassed from unknown sources.
The case statement also shows that Bodi owned property worth Tk 4.979 million in 2008. In an income statement sent to the ACC in 2013, he stated that he owned assets of Tk 160.7 million.
On May 7 last year, the ACC submitted chargesheet in the case.
