SM Akram, chief adviser of Nagorik Oikya on Saturday reiterated the demand for release of the convener of Nagorik Oikya, Mahmudur Rahman Manna, and protested the imposition of vat on education.
Addressing a human chain organised by the Nagorik Juba Oikya he said that the NBR clarification that students would not have to pay the Vat was hoodwinking because the private universities would pay the VAT by collecting the same from students, because tuition fees form the major part of their income. He said education is neither a commodity nor a service to be brought under the purview of Vat. The decision reflects the absence of good governance in the country, SM Aekram said.
Demanding the release of Mahmudur Rahman Manna the former member of Parliament said, Manna should be given proper medical treatment so long as he remained in jail.
The human chain was also addressed by Abu Bakr Siddique, convener, Dhaka South, Shahidullah Kaiser, convener, Dhaka north, central leader Iftekhar Ahmed Babu, labour leader Adv Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, editor of GreenWatch Dhaka, Mostafa Kamal Majumder, convener of Nagorik Juba Oikya Shahinur Rahman among others in front of the Natyional Press Club. – News Desk
