Internationally prominent Bangladeshi artist Shahabuddin Ahmed, now living in France with his family, has said he never felt so scared in his life in the past.Anandabazar Patrika published a long story narrating his experience after the deadly multiple terror attacks in Paris that killed many innocent people and injured many.“I never felt so scared in the past. Never felt so helpless in the past. I saw similar attacks in Paris what I had watched on television during Mumbai attacks. Horrible! This time I’m within it,” the artist was quoted as saying.The artist said he still dazed in shock and could not sleep the whole night. “It’s hard to talk now. But I’ll sleep; I’m unable to be stable mentally.”“Who can do such hateful things? What type of human being they are?Are they human being at all?” he questioned.The artist said he passed a horrific night. “Horrific! It’s still all fuzzy for me.”Shahabuddin said it was 8:30pm and they were preparing for dinner and his daughter Chitro was not home yet.The artist also said knowing his daughter was safe and sound he started contacting his friends and acquaintances.Many Bangladeshis work at different cafés and restaurants in Bastille area and he got to know they were fine too.Shahabuddin Ahmed has been bestowed with France’s highest civilian title for his contribution to Art in France and all around the world.
The Paris-based Bangladeshi artist has been conferred with ‘Chevalier De L’ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres’ (Knight in the Order of Fine Arts and Humanities) by the Ministry for Cultural Affairs and Communication of France.Shahabuddin is the second Bangladeshi to receive the title. Globally famed mime maestro and film actor Partha Pratim Majumder first received the award in 2011.Bold strokes, vibrant colours and figurative expressions are the hallmarks of freedom fighter Shahabuddin’s works. The conscience and the indomitable spirit of the Liberation War have frequently appeared as prominent connotations on his canvas.Shahabuddin was born on September 11, 1950 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dhaka. He obtained scholarship to study at Ecole des beaux-arts de Paris. He was one of the 50 master painters of contemporary arts, and had been bestowed with an award at the Olympiad of Arts, Barcelona, in 1992.He also received the Swadhinata Padak in 2000 and Bangla Academy Award in 1974.
