Dhaka-Awami League presidium member and road, transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader has termed the new committee of BNP as undemocratic and said it is not possible to establish democracy with such committee. He said BNP announced its new committee violating its constitution and those who violate their own party constitution, how they will protect country’s constitution and democracy.
“Such Jumbo Jet Size committee of BNP is the latest insult to the country’s democracy,” he said this while addressing a student rally organized by Bangladesh Chhatra League, Dhaka University Unit, at the TSC auditorium in the city.
The student rally was organized marking 86th birth anniversary of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
However, on Saturday, BNP announced 502-member national executive committee after four months later of its national council.
The minister also criticized BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s statement that their newly announced committee will play an important role in establishing democracy in the country. You (Alamgir) should not make such absurd statement as the people now don’t believe these, Quader said.
About the national unity with BNP, the AL senior leader said there will never be forged any unity with those who were involved in the killing of the father of the nation and established those killers politically in the country.
“There is no need to wage a unity afresh. We have already united against terrorism and militancy but those who support militancy they are speaking about forging a unity,” he said.
State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain addressed the rally.
Meanwhile, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday called for eliminating militancy along with the militants.
“Militancy is more dangerous than militants. The sooner militancy is eliminated, the better is for the country,” he said speaking as chief guest at the triennial general meeting of Bangladesh Inter-District Truck Drivers Union under Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation at Mohanagar Natyamancha in the city, reports BSS.
Shajahan Khan is also the executive president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation.
Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation General Secretary Osman Ali, Covered Van Driver Union President Rustam Ali and Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation Organizing Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman also spoke on the occasion, among others.
Shajahan Khan said there should be honest and efficient leaders in labour politics.
The Inter-District Truck Drivers Union had a lot of assets and property, which have been plundered, he said, adding that it happened as there was no good leadership.
The minister said the incidence of accidents on Dhaka-Aricha highway has come down remarkably because of effective steps taken by the present government.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid Taka 100 crore as compensation for the transport drivers and helpers when Khaleda Zia had ordered killing men with patrol bombs to go to power.
The shipping minister said the number of river accidents has also reduced and the government has announced 2016 as river accident-free year.-STAFF REPORTER
