Dhaka – Eight non-governmental organisations working on upholding environment and citizens’ rights on Sunday expressed concern over taking inland vessel mastership and drivership examinations by the officials of different NGOs.They also urged the government to dissolve the existing examination board and instead form a new one comprising experts and acceptable engineers to ensure transparency and accountability for safe waterway transportation.
In a statement, they called upon the authorities concerned not to allow any examination board member to prepare any question sheet.
The statement said the Department of Shipping (DoS) takes examination and provides certificates to the inland water vessel masters and drivers. It is found that a number of officials of non-governmental institutions were included in the latest examination board formed by the department breaching the rule.
Besides, there were allegations of corruption and irregularities against some department officials in regard to the examination board.
As a result, the statement said, the entire process of taking examination has become questionable and the waterway safety of the country has been put into stake.
The statement said one of the board members had long been preparing question papers and taking written and viva examination which drew flak from different quarters.
The signatories to the statement are National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey, Citizens Rights Movement president Major (retd) Mafizul Haque Sarker, Nirapad Sarak O Noupath Bastobayan Jote convener Tushar Rehman, Shipping & Communications Reporters Forum (SCRF) member secretary Rafiqul Islam Sabuj, Sammilita Joladhar Rokkha Andolan member secretary Moshiur Rahman Rubel, Council to Protect Passengers Rights of Bangladesh (CPPRB) general secretary Sekender Hayat, Nodi Rokkha Shapath convener Jassy Shikder and Nirapad Noupath Bastobayan Andolan member secretary Shahidul Islam. – UNB
