Dhaka-A Special Judge Court of Dhaka on Tuesday deferred the charge hearing in Nico graft case filed against 11 persons including BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia, to July 11.
Judge Mohammad Aminul Islam of the court fixed the new date granting time to Khaleda Zia. Earlier, her counsels Sanaullah Mia and Syed Joynal Abedin Mesba sought time citing illness of Khaleda Zia.
On April 12, the same court deferred the hearing as the BNP leader was ill on that date also. On June 18, last year, the High Court Division of the Supreme Court rejected a petition filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the legality of the case filed against her and she was asked to surrender to the lower court within two months. Later, on November 30, last year, Khaleda Zia surrendered to the trial court and secured bail in the case.
The Anti Corruption Commission filed the case on December 9, 2007, after the BNP Chairperson was arrested by the then military-backed caretaker government. Charges were made against 11 persons, including Khalea Zia, on May 5, 2008, for allegedly causing a loss of Tk 137.77 billion to the national exchequer, awarding the gas exploration contact to Canadian company, the Niko Resources.-Court Correspondent
