No proof of Al Qaeda presence in Bangladesh: Asaduzaman

Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan said on Monday there is no evidence that indicates the existence of Al- Qaeda in the country.
“Members of the law-enforcement agencies are yet to get any concrete information regarding Al-Qaeda’s existence and its network in the country,” he told BSS at his office at Bangladesh Secretariat. The state minister said the law enforcers are yet to get any link between Ansarullah Bangla Team and Al-Qaeda which can confirm that Al-Qaeda has an existence and a network in the country.
His comments came against the backdrop of newspaper reports, saying that Al-Qaeda has claimed the responsibility for the killing of blogger-writer Dr Avijit Roy, two months after the murder on Dhaka University campus.
Asaduzzaman said, “No existence of Al-Qaeda in the country has been proved.”
Regarding Al-Qaeda’s claim, Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police and joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Monirul Islam on Sunday told journalists that militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team carried out the killing mission of blogger Avijit.
He mentioned that Avijit’s killing case is being investigated, adding, “We have identified more than five persons as suspects and hope that important information could be gleaned after their arrest.”
According to a home ministry official, an initiative has been taken to form a counterterrorism unit by the government for combating terrorist activities in the country.
He, however, said that members of law-enforcement agencies are working to root out militant activities as well as their networks from the country. – BSS
