Nordics open joint embassy in Dhaka

Dhaka – The Embassies of three states of Europe’s north – Denmark, Norway, and Sweden -on Tuesday officially commenced their joint journey in international relations, merging their missions in Bangladesh into a single unit – the Nordic Embassy – providing a stronger, united presence.
The Nordic Embassy has already been operational from July last year.Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali attended the formal inauguration today as the chief guest while Jørn Neergaard Larsen, visiting Danish Minister for Employment; Dilek Ayhan, Norwegian State Minister for Trade, Industry and Fisheries; and Eva Åkerman-Börje, Ambassador at Swedish Ministry of Justice were present as guests of honour.
The ties between Bangladesh and the three Nordic countries go back to the early 1970s, at Bangladesh’s independence, according to a joint statement.
The cooperation between the Nordic countries and Bangladesh has evolved from traditional donor assistance, to a broad partnership including technology, human rights, private sector development and development cooperation, it said.
“As Bangladesh is evolving into a middle-income country, the relationship with Nordic countries has only become stronger, with an increasing engagement in political dialogue, commercial exchange and institutional cooperation.”
The Nordic Embassy is a reflection of the new phase of the deep ties between the Nordic countries, home to some of the most advanced societies in the world, and Bangladesh.
It will mean a stronger, joint platform for further expansion of the longstanding partnerships between the Nordic countries and Bangladesh.
“The three Nordic countries already have longstanding tradition for cooperation among us, we share similar values, social welfare systems, democratic societies, gender equality policy, environmental consciousness and export-oriented and trade focused economies.”
The joint embassy premises was a natural next step for all three countries in their effort to work together, offer a united expression and cooperation with Bangladesh, a long-standing partner for all three countries, it asserted.
The new building they are moving to, Bay’s Edgewater in Gulshan 2, is also an example of ‘going green’, as the focus throughout its structure and commercial activities is to minimize its environmental footprint, said the statement.- UNB
