Now no one has guarantee of natural death: Ershad

Former military ruler HM Ershad on Monday said now there is no guarantee of people’s natural death in the country, let alone the security of their property.
“‘Now there’s no security of public life and property, neither any guarantee whether one will be able to return home safe after day’s work outside,” he said.Ershad, the chairman of Jatiya Party, was addressing a commemorating meeting in memory of his party’s presidium member Jahangir Mohammad Adel at the party’s Banani office.
About murders and road accidents, Ershad said students in many areas of the country are returning home from their colleges and universities as dead bodies. “Three girls were killed yesterday (Sunday) in a road accident.”
Referring to the killing of Nur Hossain in police firing during the movement against him in 1987, the former military ruler said many people say many things about Nur Hossain but no one has even built a memorial monument for him. “Everybody places wreaths on the road at Zero Point which I’d created. Now people are getting killed every day. Now every day is a mourning day and Nur Hossain Day.”
Ershad said though everybody only cries for Nur Hossain during his death anniversary, no political party looks after his family, but “I did”.
After coming out of jail, the Jatiya Party chief said, he met Nur Hossain’s parents, consoled them and gave them financial assistance.
He claimed in the last 24 years, after his fall, people have seen only politics of violence, killings and vengeance. “I used to be called an autocrat, but I wanted to love people. I never did the politics of terrorism as I loved people.”
Ershad lamented that these days no death hurts people as they are losing love and affection for each other. “Even teachers are now getting killed. There’s no sign in sight that the situation will improve.”
Though road fatalities are increasing alarmingly, he alleged, the government is not taking any effective steps to contain it. “This situation can’t be allowed to continue and people want to get rid of it. They want to live in peace.”
Ershad said he will ensure peace for people and guarantee them their natural deaths if he gets the chance to govern the country again at the last stage of his life.
Chaired by Jatiya Party Presidium member SM Faisal Chishti, the programme was arranged, among others, by party secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu, presidium members MA Hannan, Sunil Shuvo Roy and joint secretary general Rezaul Islam. – UNB
