Obaidul for reasonable solution with Uber cabservice


Dhaka – Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said the government will be able to reach a reasonable consensus with the app-based taxicab service Uber, in a bid to give digital transport service to the country’s people.
“I’ve already resolved the differences between Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Uber. And other problems will be resolved soon through talks,” he said.Quader, also ruling Awami League (AL) general secretary was addressing a programme was organized the 24th anniversary of ‘Nirapod Sarak Chai’ (NSC) at the National Press Club in the city.
“it should not be wised to discourage Uber service. Discouraging Uber service will create the public transports crisis in the country. Besides, we are going towards a digital Bangladesh, discouraging such new technology which is contradicted with each other,” he said.
“A meeting has already been held with BRTA and I’m sure we can reach a consensus in this regard through further discussions if needed,” he added.
The minister also said the present government welcomes modern and smart systems. However, he insisted on bringing Uber service under a legal framework.
Earlier, BRTA on 25 November issued a circular declaring Uber service illegal after the US-based online transport network service launched its operation in Dhaka on 22 November.
Talking about safe transport system, the minister said he has been working relentlessly to improve transport services in the country. “but I would not tell I am successful over reducing road accidents. I am trying to do so,” he said.
Pointing finger at the film actress and organization (NSC) chairman Ilias Kanchan, AL general secretary also inspired those who used to criticize him. “Don’t stop making criticism against me. If you do so, I would not be able to rectify myself,” he added.
He also underscored the need for building up awareness among the people to avoid road accidents and urged the traffic drivers to drive slowly to avoid accidents. – Staff Reporter
