Dhaka – One person was killed and at least 10 others were injured in a ‘suicide bomb attack’ in a mosque during the Juma prayers in Rajshahi’s Bagmara Upazila, police say.
Bagmara Police Station OC Motiar Rahman told reporters that the bombing at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat mosque in the Upazila’s Mochhmoil Bakparha took place early in the afternoon.Of them, critically injured — Moyez Uddin, 40, son of Bolai Talukdar, Sayeb Ali, 36, son of late Talukdar, and Nayan ,12, son of Mukul Hossain of Syedpur area of the upazila–were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
The attack took place amid Eid-e-Miladunnabi beng celebrated across the country by Muslim devotes.
He said the immediate attention was focussed on a youth who had triggered the bomb during the prayers. His identity could not be known immediately.
Assistant Inspector General Nazrul Islam (Media) of the Police Headquarters said a belt-like object was recovered from the body of the attacker. One of his hands was also blown off in the bomb explosion.
He said none of the devotees attending the Juma prayers could recognise the attacker. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Siddiqur Rahman alias Bangla Bhai, second in command of the banned Islamist outfit JMB, had formed a militant group named Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) in Rajshahi’s Bagmara between 2003 and 2004. Bangla Bhai and his leader Shaikh Abdur Rahman were later tried for killing people including judges of lower courts in suicide attacks, convicted and executed.
Additional police and RAB personnel have been deployed in and around the mosque to maintain law and order. – Agencies
