Parliament on Wednwsday made an obituary reference unanimously to sitting MP Shawkat Hossain Hiron from Barisal-5 who passed away early yesterday, and adjourned its session by postponing the day’s business.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury placed the obituary reference in the House as the sitting of the day resumed at 5:10pm.
Awami League lawmaker Shawkat Hossain Hiron from Barisal-5 constituency died at Apollo Hospitals in the city on Wednesday morning (Inna Lillahe… Rajeun). He was 57.Hiron, former mayor of Barisal City Corporation, had been undergoing treatment at the hospital, was declared dead at about 7:00am, according to hospital sources.
He left behind his wife, one son and one daughter and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.
Hiron had been admitted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 24 after he suffered a brain stroke.
He was brought back home on April 4 and admitted to Apollo Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as his health condition deteriorated, a close friend of Hiron told reporters.
Hiron will be buried at his family graveyard after holding his namaz-e-janaza at Bangabandhu Udyan in Barisal at about 5.30pm today (Thursday).
Taking part in the discussion on the obituary reference, Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the death of Hiron is an irreparable loss both for the party and Barisal in particular.
“Hiron had turned Barisal into a city of peace from the place of terror,” she said. The prime minister said Hiron was very careful about his responsibility to people and he acquired the leadership quality to garner the support of the common people.
She mentioned that Barisal city witnessed a visible progress in terms of infrastructure development and improvement of law and order after Hiron assumed office as mayor of the city.
She said Hiron was also successful in his business profession. Hasina prayed for blessing of the Almighty for family members of Hiron and prayed for eternal peace of his departed soul.
Minister for Industries Amir Hossain Amu, Minister for Shipping Shajahan Khan, Minister for Environment and Forests Anwar Hossain Manju, Minister for Health Mohammad Nasim, Jatiya Party secretary general Ruhul Amin Howlader, AL leader Jahangir Kabair Nanak, Talukder Md Yunus, Fazle Noor Tapos and Bahauddin Nasim also took part in the discussion.
A minute’s silence was observed seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Hiron.
Earlier, the first namaz-e-janaza of Hiron was offered at the South Plaza of Sangsad Bhaban at about 4:00pm. Ministers, lawmakers, political leader and senior government officials, among others, took part in it.
Later, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah placed wreaths at the coffin of Hiron to show their last respects to him. – Staff Reporter
