People fought liberation war not to remain speechless: Rab


Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rsb said on Monday that the people did fight the War of Liberation not to remain deprieved of the dmocratic rights of freedom of speech and expression

Addressing a citizens’ rally organised by the Nagorik Oikya at a Mirpur community centre to press the dmand for the release of Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna he said that the best boys are leaving the country as they see no democratic freedoms and huge brain drain was the outcome.Rab said Pecekeepers are being sent abroad although thee wa no peace inside the country. Those in the corridors of power cannot tolerate oppoition. There has been no election of the National Press Club. The Bar Council election is also unlikely to be held. The JSD chief said that the word swadhinata is being most abuses now. Manna is now jail because he speak the truth.

The country can no longer be run with the present Constitution  and the laws, he said adding the two major perties cannot restore democraccy.

The discussion meeting was also addressed by Nagorik Oikya acting cnvener SM Akram, Senior Advocte of Supreme Court Sahdin Malik, editor of GreenWatch Dhaka Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Prof. Dilruba Chowdhury, rights activist Rubu Amatullh, Adv Subrata Chowdhury and Nakorik Oikya Dhaka North convener Shahidullah Kaider among others.

SM  Akram sought to know if the government wanted to finish Manna in a planned way. He fell under the wrath of those who are in power as Manna wanted to create a new tream of politics way from those of the AL and the BNP, and was getting encouraging responsnese from all quarters. Where the government wans to take the country to, he asked.

Adv Sahdin Malik said bad people do not like god people like Manna to excel, and kill them. At all stages of govrnance now bas people are ruling putting all good people in jeopady, he said the judiicary is now in bad shape. People are subjecte to extrejudicial killings almost everyday. If things go on like this we will be finished unless we get united and rise to to protect our rights, he addded.

Mostafa Kamal Majumder made a reference to a famous writing of eminent columnist NIrmal Sen who in the seventies sought guarantee of natural death. The people now want guarantee of natural politics, as law enforcers escort some polotical groups on streets whole drove away, assaulted or even shot at others. This in unacceptable, he said.

Rubi Amatullah said that the people fought for democratic rights which are missing now. They should ne voal to protect their own rights,  she said.

Prof Dilruba Chowdhury said facist tendencies are manifest everywhere. The people had fought to free themselves from exploitation which the people fae even now, she added
