People killed like birds in road accidents during Eid holidays: Obaidul

Dhaka-Shouldering responsibility of the anarchy in transport sector, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday admitted that people have been killed in road accidents like birds during the holidays of Eid-ul-Azha this year.“As a minister of the transport sector, I can’t avoid the responsibility of the anarchy in this sector. I am shouldering this responsibility,” the minister said this while addressing a news conference organized by Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in its auditorium in the city.
Expressing his deep shock at the massive death in transport sector, Quader, also the presidium member of the ruling Awami League, said reckless driving and movements of unfit vehicle during the Eid vacation, are the main cause behind such “procession of death” and anarchy in this sector.
However, over 35 people, including two policemen, were killed and over seventy others injured in separate road accidents across the country during the six-day Eid holidays.
Last year, at least 30 people were killed and 54 others injured during the same holidays while in 2014 at least 26 people were killed in road accidents across the country during Eid-ul-Azha, according to the media reports.
However, the minister also claimed that the incumbent government has done a massive development in transport sector but he is failed to establish discipline in this sector. The incidents of accidents in the transport sector had declined to half compared to the last year but it was not possible to maintain that success during the Eid-ul-Azha, he added.
Expressing his frustration over establishing discipline in transport sector, the minister said general people can be made to abide by the traffic rules but it is very tough to bring the politicians and influential people inside the rule of law
He also said they have already identified 142 black spots in the roads across the country and they are working to repair these black spots in order to reduce road accidents. Besides, dividers and service roads will be constructed on the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Mymenshingh highways to avoid road accidents, he added.-STAFF REPORTER
