Petition for caretaker government

A lawyer has moved the Supreme Court seeking a non-party caretaker government to supervise the next two national elections in Bangladesh.
Yunus Ali Akhand sought the revocation of the Appellate Division’s observation on May 10, 2011 that the former Chief Justice or an
Appellate Division Justice should not head a caretaker government.
In his Thursday’s plea, he sought a non-party caretaker government headed by an eminent person to supervise the 10th parliamentary polls.
The petition asked for a ruling on why failure to take initiatives to hold the 10th and 11th national elections under a non-party caretaker
administration should not be declared illegal and why those responsible should not be ordered to take necessary steps in this regard.
Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Speaker, Law Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, the Chief Election Commissioner, the ruling Awami
League President and 14-party alliance leader Sheikh Hasina, and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia have been made defendants in the writ petition.
Earlier this year, he had sought the court’s intervention to have two top leaders of Awami League and BNP engage in a dialogue to find a
solution to the ‘political impasse’.
The Constitution’s 15th amendment has scrapped the provision for a caretaker , which means the present  government would supervise the
national polls due between Oct 25 and Jan 24.
The 18-Party alliance led by the BNP  has been on the streets protesting for a return to the caretaker to hold the upcoming parliament polls. – bdnews24.com
