Phulgazi UZ chairman shot, burnt to death at Feni

Phulgazi Upazlia Chairman Ekramul Haque was killed as attackers shot him and set his car on fire in Feni town on Tuesday, accoirding to police accounts.
Ekramul Haque came under the attack around 11 am near the Bilash Cinema Hall in Feni town, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shamsul Alam Sarkar told journalists.According to reports, The miscreants exploded hand-made bombs, and then opened fire on him before setting his car on fire. Haque died on the spot.
Four people including a journalist in the car were also injured in the attack. They were admitted to the Feni Sadar Hospital with cut wounds.
Two of the injured were later sent to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
There was tension in the district city since the murder. All vehicular movements were suspended.
AL district unit went on a protest march in the city. Haque’s supporters damaged several vehicles on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, besides blocking roads in Phulgazi.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina condemned the killing and ordered the immediate arrest of the killers.
Local AL leaders said Haque was on his way to Phulgazi from his Masterparha house in Feni city.
He was accompanied by former Phulgazi Union Parishad chairman Sambu and the ‘Feni Protidin’ a local daily’s executive editor Muhib Uddin Farhad.
The miscreants suddenly blocked Ekram’s car in front of the cinema. They exploded several handmade bombs and then opened fire on the Upazila chairman.
The miscreants dragged Sambu chairman, Farhad and the driver from the car and stabbed them before setting fire to the car and leaving the scene.
Police and fire-fighters recovered the Upazila chairman’s body from the burnt car, ASP Sarkar said.
The body, burnt beyond recognition, was sent to the Feni Sadar Hospital mortuary.
Haque’s supporters ransacked shops in the area following the incident and forced them to shut down in Feni municipality area.
Additional police, RAB and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel have been deployed in the city to maintain order. – bdnews24.com
