Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to officially inaugurate the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference on Sunday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (Bangladesh Parliament).The largest annual gatherings of the CPA will be inaugurated at 10:30 am, the fifth day of the conference that began at the Radisson Blu hotel in the city on November 1.
Over 600 lawmakers including 56 speakers and 23 deputy speakers of national and provincial parliaments and delegates from 52 Commonwealth countries are expected to attend the inaugural session.
The government has taken tight security measures to ensure the safety of leaders of the Commonwealth countries. A vast area from the airport to Sangsad Bhaban, Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) and its adjacent areas have been decorated and illuminated with colourful lights.
Over 10,000 members of law enforcing agencies will be deployed at different strategic points to ensure four-tier security while Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be deployed as a striking force along with police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The main theme of this year’s conference is ‘Continuing to enhance the high standards of performance of Parliamentarians,’ while the theme of the CPA is Democracy, Diversity and Development.
The conference that involves small branch conference, commonwealth women parliamentarians and CPA executive committee meeting will continue till November 8.
After the inaugural session, a formal briefing will be given to the participants on Rohingya issue at BCIC, according to organizers.
Besides, eight workshops will take place alongside the inaugural session and the election to the executive committee of CPA is likely to be held on November 7.
Chairperson of the CPA and speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury told media that Bangladesh has proved its capability to organize such an international conference.
It will play an important role to flourish parliamentary democracy and good governance, she said.
According to the CPA programme details, the CPA will hold a special session on the Rohingya crisis after the official opening. Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali will explain the situation and the CPA officials would brief on the Rohingya issue after the special session.
It said a presentation on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would be made immediately after reading out a written message of the CPA Patron UK’s Queen Elizabeth II.
Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Md Fazle Rabbi Miah is leading a four-member Bangladesh delegation in the 63rd CPC and the other members are chief whip of the Jatiya Sangsad ASM Feroz, Fazilatun Nasa Bappy and Fakhrul Imam. – Staff Reporter
