Director General of International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Ambassador Lacy Swing arrives here on Sunday on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh.
Swing will be in Dhaka to attend the Global Leadership Meeting on Population Dynamics in the context of Post-2015 UN Development agenda.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate it while Ambassador Swing will also be speaking at the opening and will be an expert in the panel discussing ‘International migration and human mobility’, said a press release on Saturday.
It is one of a series of global consultations on building a consensus about how population dynamics, including migration, will affect the post-2015 development agenda.
High level government delegates from over 60 countries are expected to attend the conference on March 12-13 at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel.
The IOM and several other UN agencies are leading these consultation processes globally.
This will be Ambassador Swing’s second visit to Bangladesh. He had been in Dhaka in 2011 to attend the meeting of 11 migrant labour-sending countries from Asia.
During his stay, Ambassador Swing will have a courtesy call on with the Prime Minister, who will hand over an’ Award of Excellence’ to Ambassador Swing.
This award was conferred on IOM by the government of Bangladesh in 2011, in recognition of IOM’s support in bringing back more than 36,000 Bangladeshis from the then war torn Libya.
Ambassador Swing will also meet Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khondker Mosharraf Hossain and Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir.
He will also have an exchange with civil society and non government organisations working on migration and counter trafficking issues in Bangladesh. UNB
