Poet Shamsur Rahman’s 88th birth anniversary tomorrow


The 88th birth anniversary of renowned Poet Shamsur Rahman will be observed tomorrow.Different socio-cultural organisations chalked up elaborate programmes to celebrate the anniversary through placing of wreaths at his grave at Banani, discussions, recitation sessions and musical soirees.In one of the major such programmes Bangabandhu Sangskrit Jote, Bangla Academy, Jatiya Kabita Parishad and Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parisad will jointly stage a discussion and cultural function at Rabindra Chattar of the Bangla Academy premises at 4 pm.

Bangla Academy president Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman, who also chairs the Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parisad, will preside over the function, expected to be joined also by cultural personality Ramendra Majumder, Poet Rabiul Hussain, Poet Muhammad Nurul Huda and Professor Rafiqullah Khan.Regarded as a symbol of aesthetics for his lifestyle, gestures and works Rahman was born in old part of Dhaka on October 23 in 1929.Besides this, the private television channel-channel i will telecast a special episode on “Shilpo Binodon” at 5.30pm marking the anniversary of the poet.His poems largely feature the independence struggle and Liberation War. ‘Barnomala Amar Dukhini Barnomala’, ‘Asader Shirt’, ‘Tomake Pawar Jonno Hey Swadhinata’ and ‘Udbhat Uter Pithe Cholechhe Swadesh’ are some his works depicting various aspects of national transitions at different times.The number of books by poet Shamsur Rahman which were published in his lifetime is 112, including four novels, 67 of poems, one of short story, two of child literature and six translations.He made his professional debut as a journalist of the daily Morning Sun in 1957 and later he worked for Dainik Pakistan and Dainik Bangla, where he also served as its chief editor.
