They say the victim’s family owed Najma Begum a large sum of money.Narayanganj’s Additional Superintendent of Police Mohibul Islam said the woman was nabbed early on Tuesday from Damudya Upazila’s Sedelkurha area in Shariatpur. He said Najma was arrested as a suspect, as the case lodged over the murders did not name anyone.Police on Saturday night recovered the bodies of five members of one family at a house in Narayanganj City’s Baburail. The victims were identified as Taslima Begum, 40, her son ‘Shanto’, 10, daughter ‘Sumaiya’, 5, brother ‘Morshedul’, 25, and sister-in-law ‘Lamia’, 25.After their autopsy, doctors said all of them died due to strangulation and blows to their heads.Taslima’s husband Shafiqul Islam the next day filed the murder case with Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station accusing unidentified persons. The case was transferred to the Detective Branch of police on Monday.Shafiqul told police that his wife Taslima owed around Tk 1.2 million to several people including Najma and one ‘Shahjahan’ from Dhaka’s Kalabagan. Morshed also owed these people money.According to Shafiqul, Najma used to give loans to his wife on high rate of interest. He said they paid several visits to the family in Narayanganj to recover the loans and threatened harsh action if the repayment was not done.Case investigation officer DB Inspector Md Abul Khayer said, “Najma has admitted to giving loans. She also met Taslima at the latter’s house last Friday.”“Failure to recover the loans could be a motive behind the murder as the plaintiff complained against her (Najma) and the murder took place within Jan 15 and 16. That’s why we’ve arrested her.”Najma’s arrest has taken the number of those nabbed to two. The other is Shafiqul’s nephew ‘Mahfuz’.A court on Monday granted police seven days to interrogate him.
