Polls without opposition not possible: BNP

Opposition chief whip Zainul Abedin Farroque on Thursday said the ruling party will not be able to hold the next general election
without the participation of BNP.   “It won’t be possible for Awami  League to hold the election keeping BNP out of the race as it represents the country’s majority people,” he said.   Farroque came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion on polls-time non-party government arranged by Dhaka city unit Jagpa at the Jatiya Press Club.
The BNP leader urged the government to reinstate the caretaker government system in the constitution in the current session of
parliament.   Criticising the government for leaking out the copy of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 verdict against BNP leader
Salauddin Quader Chowdhury much before its pronouncement, Farroque said, “The government, which can’t protect the secrecy of the
judiciary, should quit.”   On Tuesday, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 found Salauddin Quader guilty of war crimes against
humanity during the Liberation War in 1971 and awarded him the death penalty. This is the first verdict against any BNP leader on war
crimes charges.   Farroque alleged that the government has destroyed all the institutions, including the judiciary, through politicisation
and using those for making its political gains.   “The government has miserably failed to deliver on all fronts. Now they want to grab power
like autocrat on the pretext of protecting the constitution which they amended without people’s mandate. This evil-design of the regime won’t
be implemented,” he added. – UNB
