Pramita Mallick captivates Dhaka audience

Indira Gandhi Culture Centre organised a lecture on Rabindra Sangeet by Pramita Mallick from India in IGCC, Gulshan, as part of Tagore’s 155th Birth Anniversary celebrations on May 15.

Pramita Mallick performed at Bangladesh National Museum on May 14. She also performed at Chhayanaut Auditorium on May 16. The artiste will also perform in Sylhet on May 17 and Chittagong on May 19.

Pramita Mallick is currently the foremost exponent in the field of Rabindra Sangeet in India. She was born and raised in Shantiniketan and trained in Rabindra Sangeet under Tagore’s direct disciple Sri Shantidev Ghosh and other eminent gurus like Kanika Bandopadhyay, Nilima Sen, Bishwajit Ray. After moving to Kolkata, she took further training from Subinoy Roy, Suchitra Mitra and Subhash Chowdhury. She has been singing in All India Radio and Doordarshan for over four decades and is an ‘A’ great artist. She has a large number of CDs to her credit. Among various positions held by her, she is an empanelled artiste of the ICCR; advisory board member of the West Bengal Rajya Sangeet Academy; Examiner/ Adjudicator (Ph. D) for Rabindra Bharati University; member of the advisory committee of the Rabindrasangeet GABESHANA Kendra (RSGK) and Kalanukromik Rabindrasangeet Prakalpa (KRSP) of the Visya Bharati University. She runs her own musical institution, BAIKALI, with nearly 200 students and performs with this group in India and internationally. This troupe had the legendary singer Suchitra Mitra as its President.

Pramita has been giving recitals, lectures, demonstrations, conducting workshops in different parts of the world since the mid- eighties. She has performed with foreign artistes across Europe on joint projects on Tagore. She has performed in academic sessions/conferences organized by the University of Harvard. She has extensively toured the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Kuwait, Singapore, Australia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam and has created a considerable audience for herself.

Pramita has received several awards like “Sangeet Samman’ 2013 and “Sangeet Mahasamman” 2015 by the Govt. of West Bengal ; “Life Time Achievement Award” by the North American Bengali Conference in 2015 in Houston, USA; “Gaurav’ award by the Rotary Club of Calcutta in 2015. “AJKAL SANSKRITI 2016” award by the Ajkal newspaper group etc.
