The government has decided to introduce ‘fare automation system’ magnetic card or ‘rapid pass card (prepaid card)’ from October 1 for the first time at Paturia, Daulatdia and Kazirhat ferry terminals.
Those vehicles cross the river using the ferries regularly can use the rapid pass by recharging it and irregular vehicle users can also collect the rapid pass card after paying the fixed amount on the spot. Besides, normal passengers can also collect the pass.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) signed an agreement with JICA and DTCA at the secretariat yesterday.BIWTC director (technical) Sudhakar Dutta, JICA representative Koji Mito Mori and DTCA additional executive director Rafiqul Islam signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.
Among others, shipping ministry secretary Shafique Alam Mehdi, BIWTC chairman Mizanur Rahman, DTCA executive director Qaikobad Hossain and JICA senior representative Taku Yamabe were present during the signing ceremony.
“Passengers have to use the digital rapid pass card instead of hand written tickets from October 1 on a trial basis. This system will only be introduced at Paturia, Daulatdia and Kazirhat ferry terminals. It would help the passengers to cross the river smoothly without any sufferings,” Shafique Alam Mehdi told reporters after the signing ceremony.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will bear all the expenditures for installation of necessary hardware, software and other equipments for the system, he said, adding that the JICA will also be trained the BIWTC operators free of cost.
As per agreement, the BIWTC will set up seven ticket counters in three ferry terminals in its own cost.
It would take one year to implement the pilot project.
The project is being implemented under the part of Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority’s (DTCA) ‘establishment of clearing house for integrating transport ticketing system in Dhaka city’.
At least 10 passengers could use the digital pass per second from 30 centimetre away form different counters. The card is prepared six-level security measures and none can able to copping it.
It would help to reduce traffic jam in different ferry terminals after introduction of the digital pass system. It would not be needed any cash money during using the pass and bus or truck owners could able to see their statements anytime of the passes.
The theme of the digital card is ‘One card for all public transport’. The owner of the digital card will get all facilities from BIWTC and other vehicles. The rapid pass card users could easily recharge it from any counters of BIWTC or BRTA.
The card users could recharge their digital passes from different ATM booth in near future. – Staff Reporter
