Preparations for Durga Puja progressing fast in Gaibandha

Preparations for holding Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, are progressing fast throughout the district as the commencement of the annual event draws nearer.
The five-day festival of the largest minority community will begin this year from October 10 with due respect and religious fervor. The festival will conclude on October 14 through the immersion of idols at different water bodies as the community will celebrate the Bijoya Dashami.
General Secretary of District Puja Celebration Parishad (DPCP) Principal Paresh Chandra Saha said a total of 551 puja mandaps would be erected in all the seven upazilas in the district this year.
Of the total, some 100 puja mandaps would be erected in Sadar upazila, 122 in Sundarganj, 106 in Gobindaganj, 94 in Sadullapur, 58 in Saghata, 54 in Palashbari and 17 in Fhulchhari upazila.
A preparatory meeting to celebrate the festival peacefully was held at V-AID Road Kalibari Temple of the town here on Friday night with president of DPCP Ranajit Bakshi Surja in the chair.  In the meeting, the leaders of DCPC decided not to beat drums and other musical instruments during the time of prayers of the Muslim community. Initiative has also been taken to provide uninterrupted power supply to the puja mandaps at nights to enable the Hindu devotees offering
their puja prayers, archana, kirtons, arati and other religious rituals, said executive engineer of BPDB Anwarul Islam. Superintendent of police M. Shajid Hossain said tight security measures have been taken in and around of all the puja mandaps of the district by law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful atmospherefor the smooth holding the puja festival.
Talking to BSS, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Quazi Anwarul Haque said the district administration has allocated 278 tonnes of rice for the puja mandaps to help assist the hindus to celebrate the upcoming Durga Pujawith a festive mood. -BSS, Gaibandha
