Pro-BNP lawyers sweep Dhaka Bar election

Dhaka – BNP-Jamaat’s Blue panel won landslide victory in Dhaka Bar Election 2017-2018 defeating the pro-Awami League White panel.Of the 27 posts, Blue panel secured 21, including the positions of President and General Secretary while the Awami League-backed lawyers’ White panel bagged the remaining six posts including the post of the treasurer.
Meanwhile, pro-BNP Senior Vice President candidate Md Ruhul Amin is reportedly ahead in the race with one vote. While White panel’s Kazi Shahanara Yeasmin is his rival in the competition. The recounting of the votes of this post will be held on Monday.
Advocates Md Khorshed Alam, Kazi Md Abdul Barik, Md Azizul Islam Khan Bachchu, Syed Nazrul Islam were elected President, Vice President, General Secretary and Senior Assistant Secretary respectively. White panel’s Abdur Rahman Howlader, Md Monjur Alam Monju, Md Ayubur Rahman and Mustafizur Rahman Talukder Dipu were their rivals in the race. Besides, Md Hasibur Rahman Dider of the White panel was elected the treasurer while Md Lutfar Rahman Azad was his rival.
Of the 16,198 lawyer voters, 8,910 cast their votes in the two-day election, that began on Wednesday (February 22).
Chief Election Commissioner Advocate Khondokar Abdul Mannan announced the results early Saturday. It may be remembered that in the election of 2016-2017 session, the ruling Awami League backed panel won 21 posts in the posts of President and General Secretary, white rival pro-BNP backed penal got six posts. ­- Special Correspondent
