Dhaka – Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Monday said the probe report on the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist will be revealed within 20 days after unveiling the national budget in Parliament as the investigation committee submitted its report to him.Muhith made the remarks while talking to reporters at his ministry after receiving the final report from the probe panel, headed by former BB Governor Dr Mohammad Farasuddin.
“I’ve just received the report. I’ve not yet gone through it. Let me read it first. It’ll definitely be made public,” he told the journalists in an instant reaction.
Committee members Banking Division Additional Secretary Gokul Chand Das and Buet Professor Mohammad Kaikobad were also present during the submission of the report.
The cyber heist of $101 million from the Bangladesh treasury account with US Federal Reserve Bank in New York in the first week of February was first disclosed by a news portal of the Philippines on March 5.
Later, the Finance Ministry formed the three-member investigation committee, headed by Dr Mohammad Farasuddin, asking it to submit the full report within two and half months.
The committee submitted its interim report on April 20. After 40 days, it submitted the full and final report to the Finance Minister on Monday.
Responding to queries, Muhith said he would first go through the entire report and then think about taking punitive action against those responsible for the heist incident.
Mohammad Farasuddin said he is happy with the final report and he faced no pressure from any quarter while preparing it.
He noted that the interim report was prepared in a haste to meet the deadline. “But, now the full report was prepared with details of the committee findings. As a result, it has got huge changes,” he said.
He also informed that the committee had to take technical help from three Buet teachers to enrich their report.
The probe body chief said they tried to identify the persons involved in the incident. “But right now, it should not be disclosed. Definitely, SWIFT has the responsibility.”
He also said the report has made some recommendations on how the heist money could be recovered.
