Prof Dr Ata Alahi Khan, a pioneer in the field of neurosurgery in the country, died due to kidney diseases at a city hospital on Friday morning. He was 82.Dr Ata Alahi was buried at his family graveyard at Humayunpur village in Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj district on Friday night.
He left behind his two sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Prof Ata Alahi was the founder of neurosurgery unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and introduced the postgraduate course in neurosurgery.
A meritorious student of Dhaka Medical College of early 60s, Dr Alahi served as professor at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital during his long career.
Also founder and former executive vice-president of Community Health Foundation and Community Based Medical College, Dr Alahi was former President of Bangladesh Society of Neurosurgeons.
Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeon awarded him fellowship in neurosurgery in recognition to his contributions to neurosurgical division of medical science nationally and internationally.
Dr Alahi Khan was also honoured by renowned Dr A Lakshmipathi Neurosurgical Centre of India, founded by Dr B Ramamurti, a pioneer of neurosurgeons in the subcontinent.
