Zia Trust graft case: Prosecution ends argument

The prosecution yesterday completed their argument in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case filed against BNP Chief Khaleda Zia and five others.Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kajal submitted his arguments on different points including the background of the case. He claimed that the charges brought against Begum Khaleda Zia and others were proved and appealed to the Special Judge Court-3 to give the highest punishment according to law.
After the Public Prosecutor completed arguments in presence of Khaleda Zia, Judge Dr Md Akhteruzzaman of the court set up at Bakshibazar Alia Madrasah ground of old Dhaka fixed Wednesday for submission of arguments on behalf of the defense.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia appeared before the court and sought time for placing her self-defense statement in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
In July 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission lodged the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna Model Police Station accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman, and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that had come as grants from a foreign bank for orphans.
Later, on August 8, 2011, the ACC filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Model Police Station, accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing official position to raise funds for the trust from unknown sources. – Special Correspondent
